System Explorer Installation

System Explorer is distributed in Installer and Portable version. This help describes installation of the latest version which requires operating system Windows XP or newer. For older versions please visit main download page.

Installer version

This version stores users data in registry and "C:\ProgramData\SystemExplorer" directory (Vista/W7). Uninstaller of System Explorer is created and registered in the System.

Installation

  1. Download Installer.
  2. If you have installed older version of the System Explorer, then stop all running instances. Uninstallation is not necessary.
  3. Start Installer and follow installation wizard.

Starting System Explorer

System Explorer 3.8 and higher uses own system service.
  • This service is registered during installation as "SystemExplorerHelpService".
  • This service is started during start of the System Explorer. You can find it in processes as SystemExplorerService.exe or SystemExplorerService64.exe.
  • This service is stopped during System Explorer termination.
  • If the service can't be started, try to reinstall System Explorer.

Uninstallation

  1. Find "System Explorer" folder in Start->All Programs.
  2. Click to "Uninstall System Explorer" and follow uninstallation wizard.
Troubleshooting:
  • Method 1: Open "Programs and Features" (VISTA/W7) or "Add or Remove Program" (XP), locate System Explorer and click to "Uninstall".
  • Method 2: Find directory where you have installed System Explorer and start unins???.exe file.
  • Method 3: Find directory where you have installed System Explorer, stop all running instances of System Explorer, start "SystemExplorer.exe /UNINSTALL" as admin, delete System Explorer directory.

Portable version

This version tries to minimise changes in operating system. Users data are stored in directory where the System Explorer is started.

Installation

  1. Download ZIP Package.
  2. Unpack package to target folder.
  3. System Explorer is ready to start.

Starting System Explorer

System Explorer 3.8 and higher uses own system service.
  • This service is registered and started during start of the System Explorer. You can find it in processes as SystemExplorerService.exe or SystemExplorerService64.exe.
  • This service is stopped and unregistered during System Explorer termination.
  • If the service can't be registered and started, the System Explorer tries start itself with elevated user rights.
  • If you want to use Portable version on limited user account or avoid elevation of the System Explorer, you can manualy register service with commandline "/INSTALLSERVICE". Uninstallation of this service can be done with commandline "/UNINSTALLSERVICE". This commands must be started under user with administrator rights.

Uninstallation

  1. Stop all running instances of System Explorer.
  2. Start "SystemExplorer.exe /UNINSTALL" as admin (optional, for perfect cleanup).
  3. Delete System Explorer directory.
