Main executable of the Google's Chrome Browser and serves as the base entry point for spawing of various child components for each extension, plugin or tab you have open in your browser. So you may see a lot of instances of this in the taskmanager.

A Message for Arthur Crout Above:
THANKS ARTHUR!
I noticed an extreme increase in activity after installing Chrome. I could "hear" the system going flat out all the time and the performance screen in Windows Task Manager showed my CPU usage was going ballistic. That explained why things were on a real go slow and they'd lock up, but it didn't explain how it got to be this way. I was shocked when I saw all the Chrome.exe's in Connections and Opened Files in System Explorer and thought, Great, it's taken over, and I became worried what could happen next. I went to my settings in Chrome and I HAD left - "Continue running background apps when Google Chrome is closed" checked. I thought at the time it meant to still continue with things like a download. After an uncheck and a restart everything settled down to a more "normal" pace. Phew! I agree with you: If I didn't turn you on, I don't want you on, and I certainly don't want that on. Thanks again Arthur.
Everyone might also be interested to know:
This extreme over-usage also caused an "He's Dead, Jim!" Error and I ended up not being able to use Chrome at all. I've kept Firefox handy for such cases so I Googled it and found this, among other things relating to it:
https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/1270364?hl=en
It says:
Why you’re getting this error message:
You might see the “He’s Dead, Jim!” message in a tab if:
You don’t have enough memory available to run the tab. Computers rely on memory to run apps, extensions, and programs. Low memory can cause them to run slowly or stop working.
You stopped a process using Google Chrome's Task Manager, the system's task manager, or a command line tool.
How to fix the error on computers:
First, close other tabs or unused programs
Close every tab except for the one that’s showing the message, then try refreshing that tab.
If closing tabs doesn’t work, restart your device
Shut your computer down, then turn it back on.

The standard Google Chrome(dot)exe is a harmless file when found in its original location within your PC, however, the above people forgot to mention one thing. Chromium spawns children. The one exe can have over 20 children who will start to consume your system rescources. I have seen on my system 45 children. But I have a stupid ammount of extensions so the mother/main google.exe makes duplicates of itself. Which is normal. And if you left the box checked , google.exe will run in the background when you are not even using it. I turn that option off first thing first. Not for bandwidth purposes, but for logic's sake. If I didn't turn you on, I don't want you on. Don't do any "to enhance my experience" BS on my rig.
