Probably the most widely used data compression and archival format worldwide is the ZIP file format, which has been adapted as the universal file format by various software utilities. ZIP files store one or more files that have been compressed, to reduce their file size, thus making it more ideal for archiving. The process by which ZIP creates files is handled by the zip.dll file, which is given modified names depending on the software developer that distributes it. The format for 'zipping' files was designed by Phil Katz for PKZIP. Other software developers designed their own utility for compression/decompression of files based on Katz's original design. Some of these are WinZip, Info-ZIP, WinRAR, 7-ZIP and many others. These developers added extra functionalities to the zip.dll file to support other features like modification, directory listing and user authentication for opening compressed files.
