  • SAFErating from user MikeOne for file C:\Windows\System32\en-US\smss.exe.mui (Variant: 12809948)

smss.exe is in most cases the Windows Session Manager subsystem which is responsible for starting the user session or launching the winlogon.exe and csrss.exe processes and setting system variables. smss.exe is started by system thread and waits for either winlogon.exe or csrss.exe to end. If this happens "normally", the system shuts down. In other case, smss.exe hangs the system (stop responding).
Session Manager Subsystem, or smss.exe, is a component of the Microsoft Windows NT operating system and successor operating systems. It is executed during the startup process of Windows NT, Windows 2000, XP, Server 2003 and Vista." - check more on Wikipedia : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Session_Manager_Subsystem
