[Solved] Registry corruption with autostart on XP limited account
  • BlueSky March 2012
I am not sure of the exact conditions that cause the problem, but I have seen this problem over several versions of SE, and I wanted to start a discussion on it. I currently have SE v3.8.5 installed using the installer on my 32-bit WinXP SP3 PC. On my limited account, I have SE automatically start after login. Sometimes (not every time), I get a Windows system error message immediately after login saying something like that the registry was corrupted and that it was recovered from a backup. This problem does not occur if SE doesn't autostart, and I manually start SE sometime after login. This problem does not occur on my Win7 PCs.

Could you please send screenshot of the error message?
System Explorer uses standard WIN API functions for accessing the registry. This function should be safe and should not lead to described problem. Do you have any events in event log ?

My problem was not with SE. I found other users with the same symptom here: http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/winxp/t1048048020

This free diagnostic program show that the problem was a failed RAM module:
    http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp

I removed the bad RAM module a week ago, and I haven't seen the problem since then.

Sorry for wasting your time. If someone in the future sees the same error message, hopefully the info in this topic will help them.
