SAFErating from user The-Phoenix for file %COMMONFILES%\microsoft shared\Smart Tag\FPLACE.DLL (Variant: 14876991)
I ran across this file "fplace.dll" when notified by a Microsoft Word Security Notice when closing a document in Microsoft Word Starter 2010. The notice came up as "Microsoft Office has identified a potential security concern. It located the file in "C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\microsoft shared\Smart Tag\FPLACE.DLL". It further noted: "This application add-in has been disabled. Add-ins might contain viruses or other security hazards." It provided Digital signature details: "Name: Microsoft Corporation" with a "Signing time: Saturday, February 13, 2010 7:26:13 AM" It further provided Digital Signature Information: "Signer information Name: Microsoft Time-Stamp Service Signing time: Saturday, February 13, 2010 7:26:13 AM" Apparently something in the Word application triggered the notice but when I went to the directory it is found in there is nothing there. There is no FPLACE.DLL IN THAT DIRECTORY!!! I am going to accept it as harmless because of the Digital Details looking authentic and the Certificate coming up as “This certificate is OK.”. MDD5 comes up totally clean on the anti-virus checks across the board. As noted above it is listed as a Microsoft Office XP component. The questions I have are why is and XP component showing up in a Microsoft Office Starter 2010 scenario and then it also does not show up in the file where it was said to be detected??? 12-15-2012
