SAFErating from user Denlyn for file C:\Windows\HKExt3.exe (Variant: 42896)
HKExt3 (HotKey EXT3) file is a dirivative file from Microsoft which has no bearing on major operating system files for Windows Vista. Designed to allow for hotkey functions for faster access to programs, this file will lay dormant until a program requires access for the functionality of the file. Hot key functions are designed with the consumer in mind including such keys from F1 to F12 which Microsoft Windows uses for it's own use. F1 connecting to the Windows Help files, F3 connecting to the Windows Search function and F4 being for the Address bar and so on. Installing certain keyboards or mice which require the use of Hot Keys buttons such as Internet, Email, Volume etc etc etc, will activate the HKExt3 file. This file can be removed without any harm to the system but future requirements of hot key usage will be limited. An easy fix will be to open msconfig and untick the box where HKExt3 exists for files to be open upon Windows startup. Disabling this file will mean hot key functions will be limited or unavailable. Other dirivatives may include ChiFuncExt, LchDrvKey, mHotkey.
